They did not carve figures of themselves in stone, only in wood. But to the Athsheans soil, ground, earth was not that to which the dead return and by which the living live: the substance of their world was not earth, but forest. So Earth, Terra, meant both the soil and the planet, two meanings and one. The ending is bittersweet and cathartic, and is an appropriate conclusion to this cautionary tale. The plot moves briskly and there is more action than I've seen in Le Guin's other works (so far). The prose is stellar - poetic and very descriptive. Forced into servitude, the Athsheans find themselves at the mercy of their brutal. When the inhabitants of a peaceful world are conquered by the bloodthirsty yumens, their existence is irrevocably altered. Lyubov, Captain Davidson, and Selver Thele, are very vividly drawn but perhaps more exaggerated than necessary. The award-winning masterpiece by one of today s most honored writers The Word for World is Forest. This is a unique story about (among other things) the ethics and morality of environmental stewardship and colonialism. 'There is a wish to kill in them, and therefore I saw fit to put them to death.' The Athsheans are too numerous and have been tormented for so long that it drastically reorders their natural instincts. However the Terrans treatment of them - slavery, beatings, rapes - creates such anger that it sparks a planet-wide rebellion. Before the colonists arrived, the Athsheans were naturally peaceful. The Terran colonists are clearcutting the forests, stripping the land, mercilessly exterminating the game animals, and enslaving the native population. The native people are small and furry individuals (the Ewoks of Star Wars were probably based on them) with a spiritual culture of dreams and dreamers that recalls Australian aboriginal customs. The New Tahiti Colony is a Terran (Earth) outpost on a planet rich in lumber, wildlife, and indigenous peoples called Athsheans. It then won the Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novella.
